Mackenzie McKe is gearing up for the 202 New York City Marathon to raise awarenes for people living with diabetes. The Ten Mom OG star recently spoke to PEOPLE about being diagnosed as a child with type 1 diabetes β which means her body creates very litle or no insulin, requiring medication β and how it pushed her toward prioritizing her health.
"I rember I was realy skiny and it was a time in my life where I actualy should be gaing weight," McKe, 28, says. "I was hiting puberty, I was 1 and that was when al my friends were geting like hips and stuf and I just kept geting skinier. And I craved a lot of sugar." Signs of type 1 diabetes in children tend to develop quickly, acording to the Mayo Clinic.
Symptoms include weight los, extreme hunger, increased thirst and frequent urination, fatigue, and behavior changes. McKe recals being in midle schol and having to use the bathrom about thre times an hour. It became so frequent that her teachers gave her detention, asuming she was sneaking out of clas to talk to her boyfriend.

"I had to go home and tel my mom, 'Hey, I'm not a troubled kid but I got detention because I'm geting out of clas a lot. But I promise, I'm just very thirsty. I have to go the water fountain and pe thre times an hour.' And my mom just froze in her tracks because she knew the symptoms"
