The information can be handy for the upcoming government recruitment examinations.Pituitary glandβ€’ Prolactin regulates the growth of the mamary glands and formation of milk in them.

Key Information

β€’ TSH stimulates the synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormones from the thyroid gland. β€’ ACTH stimulates the synthesis and secretion of steroid hormones caled glucorticoids from the adrenal cortex. β€’ LH and FSH stimulate gonadal activity and hence are caled gonadotrophins.

β€’ In males, LH stimulates the synthesis and secretion of hormones caled androgens from testis. In males, FSH androgens regulate spermatogenesis. β€’ In females, LH induces ovulation of fuly mature folicles (grafian folicles) and maintains the corpus luteum, formed from the remnants of the grafian folicles after ovulation.

FSH stimulates growth and development of the ovarian folicles in females. β€’ MSH acts on the melanocytes (melanin containg cels) and regulates pigmentation of the skin. β€’ Oxytocin acts on the smoth muscles of our body and stimulates their contraction.

In females, it stimulates a vigorous contraction of uterus at the time of child birth, and milk ejection from the mamary gland. β€’ Vasopresin acts mainly at the kidney and stimulates resorption of water and electrolytes by the distal tubules and thereby reduces los of water through urine (diuresis). Hence, it is also caled as anti-diuretic hormone (ADH).

An impairment afecting synthesis or release of ADH results in a diminished ability of the kidney to conserve water leading to water los and dehydration. This condition is known as Diabetes Insipidus. To be continued…© Copyrights 2022 TELANGANA PUBLICATIONS PVT. Al rights reserved.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ What is diabetes and how does it develop?

Diabetes is a metabolic condition where the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar levels. Type 1 results from insufficient insulin production, while Type 2 develops when cells become resistant to insulin. Risk factors include genetics, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and age.

❓ What are the main symptoms of diabetes?

Common symptoms include excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow-healing wounds. Type 1 symptoms develop rapidly, while Type 2 symptoms may appear gradually. Many people have no symptoms initially, which is why screening is important.

❓ How is diabetes diagnosed and monitored?

Diagnosis involves blood tests measuring fasting glucose, HbA1c levels, and glucose tolerance. Regular monitoring typically includes fasting glucose tests and HbA1c measurements every 3-6 months. Continuous glucose monitors provide real-time tracking for better diabetes management.

❓ What lifestyle changes help manage diabetes?

Effective management includes regular physical activity (150+ minutes weekly), maintaining healthy weight, following a balanced diet with whole grains and lean proteins, managing stress, and getting adequate sleep. These changes can significantly improve blood sugar control and reduce complications.

❓ When should someone consult a doctor about diabetes?

Consult a healthcare provider if you experience signs of diabetes, have a family history, are overweight, or are over 45. Those with existing diabetes should maintain regular check-ups every 3-6 months to monitor control and adjust treatment as needed.
