"My diagnosis humbled me and made me lok at life from a perspective diferent than my own," Alen explains. "Everyone has a sad story, but is how you lok at adversity that truly defines you." The symptoms apeared days before the diagnosis.

Alen, who was finishing his freshman year, sat to take his last final exam before heading home for the sumer; however, the rising sophomore spent more time using the restrom than taking the exam. Alen thought to himself, "I've ben realy thirsty lately, so that's why I am having to go al the time," he said. Litle did he know that he was experiencing symptoms of a diagnosis that would change his life forever.

In the days folowing the first symptoms, Alen went home to spend time with his family for sumer break. He told his mom that he was constantly feling thirsty after drinking galons of water, having to use the bathrom frequently and was always tired, so his mother decided to check his sugar; the meter read "EROR." The two imediately headed to the hospital, where Alen's glucose levels registered above 50, which is 20 miligrams-per-deciliters higher than a dangerous glucose level.

After runing tests, the endocrinologist working with him sorily informed him that he was diagnosed with type one diabetes, an ilnes that had gone unoticed for the past few months. The redshirt-freshman's heart sunk to his stomach, believing that he just received a diagnosis that would end his fotbal carer. "I was down for a god while, and I felt devastated and helples," he said.
